Top 10 Tips for a Stress-free House Move
March 11, 2020 | Laura WhittleBuying a new home can be an exciting time – you get a fresh start, independence and a chance to put your own stamp on a place.
That’s not to say it can’t feel overwhelming at times, especially when it comes to moving your worldly belongings from A to B within a short space of time.
Luckily, there is a way to make your move super smooth by planning in advance and getting yourself organised. To help, we’ve put together our top ten tips for making your move as stress-free as possible.
1. Make a list
As soon as you know you’re moving, write a list of everything you need to do to get yourself organised. This could include selling unwanted furniture, picking a new mattress and arranging a time for your flooring and blinds to be fitted.
2. Declutter in advance
Clearing your home of any old, unwanted and unnecessary items before you move will give you a fresh start and save you money. It’s best to get rid of stuff before moving so you can avoid paying removal fees for things that you’re only going to throw away anyway!
3. Start packing early
Get a head start by packing as soon as possible to avoid leaving it to the last minute. You could do this room-by-room or categorise your belongings to make things easier, for example, clothing, toiletries, kitchenware and sentimental items.
4. Label boxes as you go
When packing your belongings, make sure to label boxes as you go to keep yourself organised and to make things easier when you come to unpack at your new home.
5. Pick a removals company
Ask around for recommendations from friends and family on removal companies to find the cheapest and most reliable company. It’s best to book them in as soon as possible to secure their availability.
6. Ask for help
You could ask family and friends to help you out on the day of your move. Having an extra pair of hands to help you with cleaning, minding children and pets can make a big difference.
7. Check the weather
Check the weather forecast during the week of your move to help determine how the day will pan out. If it’s due to rain, wear a waterproof and keep electrical items covered. On a hot day wear sunscreen and have bottles of water to hand.
8. Get plenty of sleep
Try and get an early night before the day of your move. Moving can be physically and mentally draining, so start the day feeling well rested and don’t forget to eat breakfast!
9. Pack a moving day survival kit
Put together a handy box of essentials that you will need to access easily on the day of your move. You can include items such as tea & coffee, cleaning products, toilet roll and chargers for your phone and laptop.
10. Breathe
You’ll want to get everything done as soon as possible, but you should keep realistic expectations of how much you can achieve in a day – it’s very unlikely you’ll be able to unpack your entire house by the first night!
Take time to relax and unwind and take things slow. As long as you have your bed built, the rest can wait. Be proud of what you have accomplished and put your feet up – you’ve earned it!
